Day 69: Cambridge to Oxford, MD

We eased out of the Cambridge boat basin at 9:00am and entered the Choptank River.  We were the only pleasure boat on the water, but we saw several low, white crab boats working close to shore.  Crabbers use both crab pots and trot lines baited with little pieces of "bull lips" in order to catch the crabs.  Crabs are the mainstay of watermen all up and down the Chesapeake Bay.

It wasn't long until we reached the mouth of the Tred Avon River and went up it a couple of miles until we reached the channel into Oxford.  Normally we run at 16 knots, but this day we ran about half the trip at 12 knots which was enjoyable as it gave us more time to look at the beautiful homes along the coast.

Oxfordis a quiet town made up of just a few streets and numerous boat yards.  In fact, virtually every foot of waterfront in the harbor is occupied by boat yards and marinas.  We toured the harbor then tied up at Oxford Boatworks for a long day ashore.

This was the shortest run of our trip.  Tomorrow we are off to St. Michaels.
