Day 63: Ocracoke to Roanoke Island, NC

The channel out of Ocracoke is well marked through the shoals to "deep water" which is 13' to 22'. Every 15 miles or so is a mark so staying on track is easy in Pamlico Sound. We counted eight shrimp trawlers working along the way.

From Pamlico Sound we went onto a narrow channel that starts south of Roanoke Island and angles NE, going east of island. The depth of the channel is 6' most of the way.

After an hour in the channel we passed the cut to Wanchese, which is the big custom sportfishing capital of NC. It's proximity to Oregon Inlet also makes it a haven for sportfishing charter boats.

A few miles farther north we turned to port, followed a channel into the town of Manteo. Here we tied up at the Manteo Waterfront Marina for the night. Just across the creek is a replica of the 69' bark Elizabeth II which brought 50 English settlers here in 1585.
